Question about a colostomy

I have decided to get a colostomy to control my bowels. Just a quick question, how long can I expect to be out of work for? My work is desk work so it's not like it would be stressful on my body.

Pineapple Helps You Poop

It is interesting that the food forum on this site gets just a few posts. Food is a big part of my life and this injury.

Here's a big tip on staying regular without taking stool softener's and all that other garbage. Eat a pineapple every week. Fortunately, there is a Trader Joe's only a few blocks from me that has great pineapples.

Besides digestion, pineapples have a bucket load of other health benefits too. Pineapples reduce inflammation, aid in wound healing and help your bones and gums, just to name a few.

Spinal Cord Stimulation Helps Paralyzed People Move Their Hands

" Two participants with severe injuries to their cervical spine?the spinal cord at the level of the neck?were implanted with an array of 16 electrodes. Each implant was placed onto the spinal cord at the level of the injury and extended just above and below the injury. Participants practiced grasping and moving a handgrip while receiving varying levels of electrical pulses from the device. One person was tested daily over seven days while the other had weekly sessions for eight weeks.

In both individuals, hand strength improved over the course of a single session. With additional sessions, the accuracy and force the participants could generate gradually increased. The effects were maintained even in the absence of stimulation; by the end of the study, both individuals could generate more force without any stimulation than at the start of the study with stimulation."

Transitioning from Magic Bullets to Enemeez

$

I've decided to try Enemeez after 34 years on Magic Bullets. For whatever reason, I'm not expecting the transition to go well. I received 10 free samples, asked questions of a company representative who called me, and read the material that came with the samples. I tried Enemeez last night and not much happened. The instructions in the flyer that came with the samples say if you don't get a response after 15 minutes and digital stimulation, you should use another Enemeez, and you can repeat this again, if the second application doesn't work. So you may need to use up to three Enemeez per bowel program to get things moving. Argh! That could get expensive at appx $2.50 per tube possibly $7.50 per day.

Do you find you need to use multiple tubes of Enemeez per bowel program?
Did you have to use multiple tubes only when you first began using Enemeez?
If you were a long time user of Magic Bullets, did it take a while for Enemeez to work reliably for you?

The representative I spoke with, said that bisacodyl "builds up in your system" and it may take a while to get bisacodyl out of your system. I'm wondering if that is valid.

I've read Mombo's and Donno's tips about putting the liquid in a syringe and either rigging up the Enemeez tube on the syringe or using a short piece from a catheter to get the liquid high enough in the rectal vault. I didn't try this technique last night (first time). I also know that the rectal vault should be empty and the liquid should not be squirted into stool in the rectal vault. Are there any other tips for success that anyone can share.

Thanks.

Toyota Teaming With Segway Inventor Kamen on Better Wheelchairs

Toyota Motor Corp. said it will work with Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway human transporter, to develop advanced wheelchairs for disabled people and aging populations worldwide.
The agreement announced Saturday gives the world?s largest automaker a license to use balancing technology that Kamen has installed in prior generations of wheelchairs for medical rehabilitative therapy and other purposes. The agreement will also help Kamen introduce a new version of his iBOT wheelchair, which used two sets of powered wheels to walk up and down stairs and help disabled people stand face-to-face with companions. Kamen stopped selling the iBOT in 2009.

Why are Urostomies not reversible?

$

This may be a silly question but I can't find the answer anywhere? Why are urostomies not reversible when I routinely hear of reversible colostomies? Is it because there is only so much tubing (urethers) to work with? Also, I have heard of a handful of cases where an incontinent urostomy was initially done and a continent urostomy done some years later, is this a rare occurence? Is this possible in all cases or?

It's been proposed to me as a possibility but I really hate that this is a permanent thing and since docs are uncertain it'll help, I may be out of options if it doesn't work.

Any ideas? SCI Nurse maybe? Thx!

Squaring Frogs Legs forks on a series 1 ZRA

Having had to take it all apart in an attempt to find a temporary fix to my wrecked caster housing I'm now trying to put it back together. It's really unclear how to square the casters. The old manual is quite vague and the new manual only has a diagram for the series 2. All I know for sure is that you don't do it the usual way with a set square!

Chronic back pain due to DDD

Hello,

I have been living with chronic pain for a decade. I have DDD in L4-L4 and L5-S1. No cure, no respite. Sometimes the pain creeps out at the middle of the night. I'm feeling so helpless, yet, least understood by people.

how to sleep on stomach?

$

I've been getting a lot of redness around my hip fairly quickly when I lie on my side, so I thought I would try sleeping on my stomach.

But I cannot quite seem to position myself on my stomach. My legs get tangled up when I try. And the whole procedure feels unsafe, like I might be twisting something. (T3, no attendant).

I have some related questions:

1. Is stomach sleeping a good response to redness on hip from side sleeping?

2. If so, how to actually position oneself on the stomach?

3. What is the best practice for side sleeping (or just lying on side for a while as a weight shift) to avoid hip redness?

Clinical Trial - Impact Of Probiotics On Utis In SCI and SB

$

Hi! My name is Liz and I am mom to Spencer, age 6. Spencer functions at L1/L2, has a VP shunt (no revisions, knock on wood!) and loves all things sports. Spencer had the MACE/mitrofanoff surgeries in 2015 and he is cathed every three hours.

I am involved with a study that is looking to improve the management of UTIs for individuals with SB or SCI. We are currently recruiting for a clinical trial that will investigate if a probiotic solution put directly into the bladder (using a catheter) can help prevent/manage UTIs. Participants must be at least six (6) years old, use intermittent catheterization and have had 2 or more UTIs in the past year.

MedStar Rehabilitation Hospital and Children's National Medical Center are conducting this study in partnership. Both hospitals are located in Washington, DC, but you do not need to live in the area or travel to DC for the study. The study is done entirely at your home and all materials are mailed to you. This clinical trial is unique because the research team includes individuals that actually have SB, SCI or are parents of individuals with SB. The hope is that by incorporating the views of individuals that actually live with SB/SCI, better treatments can be developed.

We could really use your help. If you (or your child) would like more information, please contact either Bruce Sprague (202-476-3433 or bsprague@childrensnational.org) or Inger Ljungberg (202-877-1684 or inger.h.ljungberg@medstar.net).

Just ordered this. I am tall and spend a lot of time at amusement parks. This will be my first manual chair (I'm currently in a scooter). I went with big wheels, MPE's and a Surge handrim to leverage my size and get as much out of each push as I can. I went cheap on the wheels, but might upgrade at some point. I'd appreciate any comments about the impact of different wheels. Fortunately, it's not much cost lost if I buy a second set of wheels (compared to ordering different wheels as original equipment) and I might want to have a set anyway for grassy outings (I'm guessing these standard wheels with fatter tires???). Thank you for taking a look!

priceless UTI supplement

I have a C5 spinal cord injury. Therefore, unfortunately I am stuck with a indwelling catheter at the moment. I broke my neck in a motorcycle accident seven years ago. I have been plagued with UTIs since. I have tried every supplement I can possibly think of. With a little to no results. Until now. I have recently discovered something called "silver shield". This is a priceless remedy to all infections! Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and all pathogens. Anyone suffering from chronic UTIs needs to read the article listed on the website below.. I assure you it will change your life as it did mine and is still currently doing ;-)

I am selling a set of new 25" LX wheels with silver hubs and black spokes. One wheel has a scratch from storage but otherwise they are flawless. They have new Bontrager H4 Plus tires on them. I'm asking $550 plus shipping for the wheels and tires. I also have a set of used Natural Fit handrims that will fit these wheels. Asking $100 for the handrims. Let me know if you have any questions.
